There are cities that reveal themselves slowly, and San Miguel de Allende is one of them. The cobblestones, the bougainvillea spilling over colonial walls, the particular quality of light at altitude: it takes a day or two before the place fully lands. Choosing the right base makes all the difference. And Casa Arca, occupying the iconic Casa Cohen just two minutes from the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, is as good a base as San Miguel has to offer.
Casa Arca: A Building with a Story

The history of Casa Arca begins with Isaac Cohen, a Syrian immigrant who arrived in Mexico in 1920 with little money and a talent for commerce. A decade later, he moved his growing family and his business into an 18th-century property in the very centre of San Miguel de Allende, a building that would carry his name for nearly a century. Casa Cohen is now part of UNESCO’s World Heritage designation for the city’s historic centre, which means that staying here is not simply staying in a beautiful hotel. It is staying inside a piece of Mexican history.
The hotel’s founders were aware of the weight of that inheritance and chose to honour it rather than obscure it. The name Casa Arca (the ark home) reflects a philosophy of radical welcome: a place where all are received, where community is valued above exclusivity, and where the building’s layered past becomes the texture of the present.
Rooms That Feel Like They Were Tailor-Made

The suites feature Mexican design with bespoke furniture created by local artisans, and details including embroidered cushions, hand-blown glass lamps, and pieces from Casa Arca’s own art collection. Some suites have sumptuous bathtubs. Throughout, the colours are those of San Miguel itself (warm ochres, terracottas, deep blues) and the light, filtered through windows that have looked onto the same street for three hundred years, has a quality that no interior designer could manufacture. Each room feels inhabited rather than staged, which is precisely the point.
Where Mexican Soil Meets the Mediterranean Table

The restaurant’s atmosphere, designed by Maye Ruiz of Estudio Maye, is a dialogue between 18th-century architecture and contemporary design, framed by handcrafted clay pieces and a curation of natural light that highlights the history of Casa Cohen. The cooking spans Mexican and Mediterranean influences, drawing on local ingredients and careful technique to produce something that feels genuinely rooted in the region rather than simply inspired by it.
A Rooftop to Plan Your Evening Around

At the summit of Casa Arca sits Altar: a rooftop terrace that functions as the hotel’s most expressive space. Designed around raw materials and natural light, it offers 360-degree views that take in the Parroquia, the rooftops of the centro histórico, and the endless horizons of the Bajío beyond. By morning it is a place for stillness; by night, for music, cocktails, and the particular joy of being high above a beautiful city with nowhere else to be.
The Kind of Hotel That Earns Its Stars

For the second consecutive year, Casa Arca has been awarded a MICHELIN Key, a distinction the prestigious guide gives to hotels offering the most extraordinary and authentic hospitality experiences in the world. It is a recognition that feels earned rather than surprising: this is a hotel where the thinking behind every detail is visible, and where the experience of being a guest feels genuinely considered from arrival to departure.
San Miguel de Allende was named the world’s best city in 2025. Casa Arca makes a strong case for where to stay while you find out why.
