23 Hotel Medellín: The Design That Turns a Building Into a Garden

23 Hotel

Medellín does not need much help making an impression. The climate alone (that famous eternal spring, mild and balmy year-round) is enough to stop most visitors in their tracks. But the city’s El Poblado neighbourhood, and within it the refined pocket of Provenza, has developed a particular kind of creative energy: boutique restaurants, independent design stores, a cultural scene that takes itself seriously without losing its warmth. 23 Hotel sits at the centre of all of this.

In a city that has spent the last two decades reinventing itself with considerable flair, 23 Hotel has become one of Medellín’s most compelling reasons to stay a little longer.

23 Hotel Medellin: A Building That Breathes

The most distinctive feature of 23 Hotel, and perhaps its greatest design statement, is the vertical integration of vegetation. The building breaks with conventional facades by incorporating garden balconies on each floor; a decision that makes the exterior feel less like a hotel and more like a living thing, draped in greenery and in constant, quiet dialogue with the city’s natural abundance. The boutique design hotel emphasises its lush surroundings with a foliage-covered exterior and greenery and abundant natural light inside.

This is not decoration. The architecture responds to Medellín’s privileged climate, optimising cross ventilation and natural light to create fresh, bright spaces, reducing the need for artificial air conditioning. Every design decision has been made with the topography, light, and cultural identity of the city in mind: the mountain slopes, the Paisa heritage, the particular quality of afternoon light in the Andes. The result is a hotel that feels genuinely rooted in its place rather than dropped into it.

The Rooms

The rooms were elaborated with a high level of design, with all finishes made with Colombian artisans who reflect the local culture. Depending on the room, guests find different spaces with different textures, lights, and visuals. The most coveted detail is the large circular porthole window, a signature feature in the superior rooms, that frames the city like a photograph. It doubles, improbably, as one of the more pleasurable places to sit and simply watch Medelln go about its day.

The interior design goes beyond the visual to offer a complete sensorial experience. Handcrafted furniture in the common areas, crafted with natural fibres and local techniques, adds character and authenticity. Strategic golden lighting creates intimate and inviting atmospheres, evoking the light of a tropical sunset.

The Terrace of the Sun

The rooftop has an open-air cocktail bar with a small food menu, a pool, and stunning views of Medellín. Known internally as the Rooftop del sol, it is where the hotel’s philosophy reveals itself most completely: city views stretching out over the valley, the warm light of early evening, the particular feeling of being elevated above the noise while remaining entirely within reach of it. It is the kind of outdoor space that makes you rearrange your plans for the afternoon.

A Hotel that Earns its Setting

23 Hotel has been nominated for World’s Leading Design Hotel South America at the World Travel Awards for four consecutive years, a recognition that reflects what guests consistently report: that this is a hotel where the design is not incidental but structural, where the thinking behind every element is visible and coherent. Calm is the first thing you feel. Silence, rest, peace; far enough away from the noise to breathe, but a step away from the vibrant rhythm of the city, its nightlife, and its flavour.

In a city as energetic and full of forward momentum as Medellín, that balance is undoubtedly what the best hotels are for.
